• What should be paid attention to in the processing of nickel alloy coils?

    04-10-2025

The nickel alloy coils produced by our company are widely used in high-end fields such as aerospace, energy and chemical industry due to their excellent high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Many customers often learn about our production process when they learn about our nickel alloy coils. Due to the special properties of nickel alloy coil materials, our company strictly controls the process details during processing. Next, I will introduce in detail the core considerations of our team during production and processing:

    1. Equipment and tool selection
Nickel alloys have high hardness and strong viscosity, and conventional cutting can easily cause tool wear and built-up edge problems. It is recommended to use cobalt-containing high-speed steel or carbide tools, whose red hardness and wear resistance can effectively extend the service life. The front angle of the tool should be controlled at 5°-10°, and the back angle should be maintained at 8°-12° to avoid excessive sharpness of the cutting edge and cause chipping. The machine tool must have high rigidity and stability, and the spindle speed should be low-speed cutting (10-50m/min), and the feed rate should be controlled at 0.05-0.2mm/r to prevent excessive accumulation of cutting heat.

    2. Optimization of cutting parameters
The thermal conductivity of nickel alloy is only 1/4 of that of carbon steel, and local high temperature is easy to form during processing. Minimal lubrication (MQL) or high-pressure cooling system should be used, and cutting fluid containing sulfur and chlorine extreme pressure additives should be selected to reduce cutting temperature and enhance lubrication effect. Step cutting is preferred during rough processing, and the excess is removed in multiple layers; the cutting depth must be guaranteed to be ≥0.2mm during the finishing stage to avoid aggravated wear of the tool when cutting in the cold hard layer.

    3. Forming process control
During the bending of the coil, the rebound amount must be strictly controlled. It is recommended to use hot forming process to preheat the plate to 400-600℃ to reduce the deformation resistance of the material. For complex shape parts, progressive forming technology can be used to reduce stress concentration through multiple small deformation processing. Stress relief annealing (650-800℃ for 2 hours) must be performed after cold forming to eliminate work hardening and restore material toughness.

    4. Key points of surface treatment
Cutting fluid and oxide layer are easy to remain on the surface of nickel alloy after processing, and it needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Ultrasonic cleaning combined with neutral cleaning agent can be used to remove impurities. A nitric acid-hydrofluoric acid mixed solution (volume ratio 5:1) is used for pickling, but the pickling time must be strictly controlled (≤15 minutes) to prevent over-corrosion. Finally, the surface finish is improved to Ra≤0.8μm through electrolytic polishing to enhance corrosion resistance.

    5. Quality monitoring system
Establish a full-process detection mechanism: the chemical composition and grain size of raw materials need to be tested; the cutting temperature is monitored by infrared thermal imager during processing, and the dimensional accuracy is controlled by three-coordinate measuring instrument; the finished product is tested for internal defects by eddy current flaw detection, and the hardness test is used to evaluate the material performance. It is recommended to keep the processing parameter records for key processes to ensure that the product quality is traceable.
